Has anyone read this? I bought it at the Kona airport to read on the way home. I read most of it on the plane though I have had a tougher time getting to it since we got back. I have found it very interesting and thought some of you may as well. There is a lot of Hawaii and Hawaiian Alii history in the book as well.

Blake,
something that may or may not be in this book that you will find intresting is that Richard Smart who died in the last few years was Gay. He was very progressive and did wonders for the Big Island helping the poor folks out some. I meet him many times and found him to be someone that I felt was a real person. Just some insite Blake, see I'm not all bad.

I have not read that one, but I did read the big hardback book about the Parker Ranch and the Paniolos. The one that came out fairly recently. It is more of a coffee table book. I would bet Blake's book has a lot more interesting stuff in it.

I knew Richard Smart was gay. I also heard rumors that he died of AIDS, though it was said he died of cancer. He seemed like a really interesting guy. He really riled up the family in the '90's when his will was read. He gave the bulk of the $400 million estate to a non-profit trust and the family members only got tiny bits.

Blake your book probably mentioned that he went to NY for a while and was a night club singer and then made it to Broadway before moving back to Hawaii. Interestingly he lived on Oahu when he died, not Wiamea. He also did a lot for the arts in Waimea.

Here is his obit from the NY Times in 1992:

This is all fascinating and something I did not know. Not sure if any of it is in this little book I bought. Now I really have to find time to finish it so I can let you know! Thank you for sharing this information with me Dev and Tom!

I finally found a bit to finish the book. I got to the Richard Smart part but nothing about his being gay (unless perhaps you are meant to just put two and two together). Of course he was still alive when this book was written and this subject may have been a bit more taboo when it was written. I am unsure of that time as it was apparently copyrighted in 1974 but not published until 2006.

But I digress. The book was entertaining and educational and I would recommend it if you get a chance. It is an easy read and only like 150-200 pages long. I am glad I picked it up.
